My Journey as an Author
In the grand scheme, my journey as an author began when I was very young when I used to write short stories or poems for fun or for school. However, in terms of writing novels my journey began when I was sixteen.
In my sophomore year of high school I took a creative writing class and had a wonderful teacher who encouraged us to write down any ideas and inspiration and try to turn those into stories or books. It was during that time that I began to write my first novel. This was back in the days of paper and pen so I literally wrote it. Even after the class ended I continued to write this book and my teacher continued to support me through it. When it was finished I read it to family and friends who all thought it was very creative. But I didn’t know what else to do with it so I tucked it away and moved on with my life. During the next few years I was caught up with high school drama and didn’t write much. Then in college the poetry bug hit me and I wrote a lot of simple poetry in a journal. Then again I had a dry spell. My life took me in several different directions and it wasn’t until four years later that I had the urge to write again.
I had read and fallen in love with the Harry Potter series and I realized that I had forgotten that I was a huge fantasy fan. I tried to read other fantasy books and nothing ever caught my attention in the same manner. I realized that it was the writing style of the other books that I didn’t enjoy and I began to think about if I wrote a fantasy novel what would be the subject matter and who would the characters be and an idea began to spark in my head. I thought about how JK Rowling had described elves in her books. They were the small, plain house elves that were the slaves of the wizards. She talked about how they had magic too that was sometimes even more powerful than the wizards because they were born with it. However, she does not go into more detail than that. Then I thought about how different of a vision this was than JRR Tolken who had described elves as innately beautiful, they were tall and majestic and looked similar to humans but with tall ears. I thought about the Riverrun elves and the Wood Elves that he talks about in Lord of the Rings and their magic. In the movie version of Lord of the Rings he shows the Riverrun elf being able to create a stampede of horses made of water to overtake the dark creatures that are after the Hobbits. I thought this was very neat, in fact it was my favorite part of that first movie and I started to think what a shame that they did not describe their magic or show more of their magic spells. Then I thought, I wish JK Rowling would write an elf series with elves that had the ability to control natural elements like water, air, earth and fire. That would be so cool. But then I realized why should I sit around and wait for another author to write a story when I could write one myself?
Over the next week this thought kept popping into my mind along with characters, spells, scenery for the novel etc. Until finally I took it as a sign that someone was telling me to write this down. So I pulled out my laptop opened a word document and began writing. I wrote almost every evening for the next year after work and on the weekends until the book was finished.
